Does Hiring a Professional Editor Really Help?

I’m debating whether to hire a professional editor for my upcoming book. Do they genuinely improve the quality and readability, or can self-editing be enough for indie authors? How much impact does a professional editor have on reader engagement, reviews, and overall sales? I’d love to hear from authors who have worked with professional editors was the investment worth it, or did it make little difference compared to doing the editing yourself?
