About the League Introduction and history of the league Introduction/history of the League - Pete Bond, League Chairman. As a keen golfer, regular outings and competitions for me consisted of Stroke play, Stableford, and a whole range of other matches, very seldom was there a match play competition. With many golf societies in Bangkok, the time seemed right for the introduction of some form of competition where the format would be only match play, hence the idea for the league. Contacting several of Bangkok's leading golf societies elicited a very positive response and, at the end of 1995 a meeting of interested groups was held which led to the formation of the Bangkok Golf League. The initial clubs in the league consisted of Thunderbirds (now O'Reillys), the British Club, the Bangkok Wanderers, The Golfers Cocktail Lounge, The Japanese Society, the Lighthouse Golf Group, the British Embassy Golfing Society (now The Londoners) and the Americans. The Japanese and the Americans have since left the league. In the second year, due to the interest of several other societies, the league was increased to 10 teams, and, this year, a further increase to 12 clubs. In addition to the above, we now have Delaneys, Dynasty, Larry's Dive, and an additional club from the British Club, the BC Lords. It is probably apparent to the casual observer that most of the club and societies are named after some of Bangkok's more respectable drinking establishments. The league is very fortunate to have very supportive sponsors, the current sponsors being PriceWaterhouseCoopers. It is only with their valuable support that the league can continue to prosper. Not only do the sponsors provide an excellent range of monthly prizes, the end of year presentation dinner is well catered for with excellent prizes for winning teams. Without doubt, whilst the golf is the reason for the gathering, the social aspect of the league is taken very seriously. With a monthly outing of 96 golfers, the after game 'inquest' is almost as much a part of the event as the golf. Mid Year, the league is interrupted with the 'Mid League Bash" a Texas scramble format competition where players from all teams are mixed together. This has proved to be a popular fixture with over 100 players attending the last 'Bash'. The whole philosophy of the league is for players to have a good match, meet new people and enjoy the outing. If you win, well, maybe that's a plus, but for many, just being part of the event is what matters.
