Flex – shaft designation of stiffness used to help golfer choose the correct shaft. Flex designations are as follows:
L = Ladies flex (Most flexible shaft of the model)
L/A = combination flex where the shaft can be trimmed for both L and A flexes
A = Amateur or Senior flex
R = Regular flex
R/S = combination flex where the shaft can be trimmed for both R and S flexes
S = Stiff flex
X = Extra Stiff flex
TX = Tour Extra Stiff fle
NEW TECHNOLOGY -- Royal Precision's Micro Taper Step Technology
Royal Precision is preparing to debut its new 2003 line. As clubmakers would expect from a shaft manufacturer well known for providing real game improvement components, Royal Precision's new Precision Lite will be far more than just an entry into the light steel arena. By incorporating the performance benefits of patented MicroTaper Step Technology, the new Precision line of shafts will offer models weighing in as low as 100 grams (raw weight) and performance-enhancing benefits such as greater energy transfer and softer feel.
"For several years, the Microtaper has been an actual product name," says engineer Kim Braly, Royal Precision's chief technical director. "But our design team wanted to bring the specific, performance-enhancing benefit of MicroTaper Technology to an entire line of lightweight steel products." Braly explains that the MicroTaper Step Technology utilized in the Precision Lite features a more shallow, angled step than what is seen in traditional step designs. Traditional designs, he says, create a steep angle at the point of the step, and whenever a shaft loses outside diameter quickly over a short length — a weak point in the shaft is created. However, the MicroTaper design used in the Precision line eliminates those weak points and creates a 'step' that is much more durable and is much more efficient at transferring energy.
"Because of their re-entry angles, traditional steps along a shaft are so steep that they are actually stress risers," says Braly. "So by engineering a more shallow step, we are able to make a lighter steel shaft which transfers more energy, provides a softer feel and is actually more durable." Look for a sneak preview of Royal Precision's Precision Lite steel shaft in the upcoming holiday issue of Golfsmith's Clubmaker Magazine.
