23 march 2003 - Patrick Tracey. Shin-Rhone, Co. Offly, R. of Ireland. hello there all you golfing anoracks who read course reviews and WELCOME! You will find this one of the best reviews ever spotted and should log it in your little black books as review Number 1,969. (Put a tick next to it to show you have read it - but only AFTER you have read all of it. Without a tick - it just means you have 'spotted' it. Am I right or am I right? I'll give everything a 2 because I didn't feel comfortable with the set up of the course and the facilities. It was all rather pretentious and a little bit Disney/Golf. It was how they thought golf should be - serious and lacking in fun. Overall, if they tried to forget the 'Royal' tag and rather concentrated on the 'Golf' tag it would earn them a 4 for most questions from me. (NOT that this counts for anything of course!) The caddies were good - but it's rather silly and trite to say they are the best in the world. How can anyone know this? I mean let's get it into perspective here. The food was very ordinary and the service was very formal and souless. Don't you all agree that 'Apress Golf' is as important as the round itself? Without a good relaxing game the food is not welcome and without good club house/restaurant facilities the effects of a good round can be spoilt. Basically, I guess I am saying that the centre of a metropolis like Bangkok is NOT the place for a challenging golf course - it will always be no more than a up-scaled hotel amenity. A bit like a 9-hole course latched on to a 5 * hotel I guess. If you have got this far - you will realise I have had a bit of a barney with the missus and feel like writing my frustrations out of my system. I mean, how am I doing so far? 2 out of 5? I digress. The fairways are rather boring and the greens rather small. The bits in the corners - where they have installed 'lakes' and streams to try to get the player to forget 10,000 vehicles an hour and a mono train every few minutes DON'T work. What they do is to make the game slow - because every one seems to tense up and then crap out into the aqua! Not a pretty sight - when all 3 of ones playing partners do this in quick (or slow actually) succession - at every bloody lake/pond/(pool?) If his Royal Highness ever gets around to playing golf he will no doubt find plenty to please him here. Most helpful will be the helipad on the adjacent police hospital roof to whisk him away before having to endure the food in the club house. (Next time I will retire to the Erewan Hyatt and take my light snack in the lobby noodle restaurant called Mee and You". If you like Northern Thai Curry THIS is THE place to enjoy it. And if you have had a lousy round - perk yourself up with the Duck Mee - it is MAGIC!! Well, 'er indoors has brought me a cup of tea - kissed me on the neck, gave me a coy smile and has now gone off to have a bath - so perhaps things are looking up for the rest of the evening in this household. I don't think I'll bother to finish this review - I seem to have things to do. ;-) Yours as ever Patrick Tracey. Handicap: Not discussed in polite circles.

Its a members only club. To talk about value for money is not appropriate here. If you have the chance to play then it is really an experience. It is not about the design or the condition of the fairways it is about location, the breathtaking atmosphere and the skyline. It is probably the most expensive golf property in the whole kindgom. Just imagine a golf course in the neighbourhood of Harrods in Kensington.Prickling thought, right?

The best caddies in Thailand. Also the best value for money only 500 a mo. for the tax.
